Thoughtful Thursday:

Someone To Watch Over Me

Have you ever been going along, minding your own business, just like a normal, routine day, when suddenly…BOOM!…the unexpected happens? Recently, I was involved in an automobile accident. Yes, I am fine, physically, but that scene has played over hundreds of times in my mind.

I was just driving along, on my way to a doctor appointment. I was on a flat stretch of road. There were no curves, and the weather was clear and sunny. I had my cruise control set on sixty, because…you know…the speed limit was fifty-five. It was midday, and traffic was light. No cars were in front of me at that point, and I could see a few cars some distance behind me, but not close.

I was just driving along, lost in my own thoughts. The radio wasn’t playing. It was just a pleasant drive, as I was humming Christmas carols softly to myself. I glanced in the rear view mirror, as one tends to do intermittently while driving. All I saw was the grill of a car coming upon me. Then…BOOM! He slammed into the back of my car, knocking me over into the left lane. For a moment, I lost control of the car, as it began to fishtail back and forth, similar to a skid on snow. My front end traveled back into the right lane, then back to the left lane. My thoughts were to get off the highway as quickly and safely as possible. When I returned to the left lane, I gently pressed the brake, and eased my car off the road, and beside the grassy median, before coming to a stop. The first thing I did was to call 911. My voice was shaking, and so were my hands. I looked in the mirror again, and could see that the car that hit me was on the right side of the road, about fifty or sixty yards back. The front of his car looked demolished. A deputy was on the scene in less than five minutes.

My car was drivable, but had some damage to the rear end. I called my husband, cancelled my doctor appointment, and my husband came immediately to check on me, and to see that my car was indeed, safe to drive. We met a friend in the area, and I recounted the events to her. I was still somewhat emotional, but even more so, when she said, “Suppose that there had been a car in the left lane, or even worse, a semi truck! You could have been killed!” I let that reality sink in, and added my own thought of, “What if my car had flipped?”

I was overcome with gratitude! Let me tell you about my Jesus, and how He watches over me. One of my favorite passages is found in Psalm 121. It tells about how God watches over us, and never sleeps nor slumbers. I am reminded that, wherever I go, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit is watching over me! That realization humbles me every time!

Here’s what the Bible says: (Psalm 121, NIV)

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
Where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
The Maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot slip—
He who watches over you will not slumber;
Indeed, he who watches over Israel
 Will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord watches over you—
The Lord is your shade at your right hand;
The sun will not harm you by day,
Nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all harm—
He will watch over your life;
The Lord will watch over your coming and going
 Both now and forevermore.

I am so thankful that God’s hand of blessing was over me that day! I am thankful that He never slumbers nor sleeps. I am thankful that He’s my Savior!

Today, as you go about your daily routine, take time to recognize that the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob…the creator of the universe…the giver of all good things…is watching over you!

Give thanks.

HAVE A GREAT THURSDAY!
