THOUGHTFUL THURSDAY
Supper’s Ready
When I was a little girl, (before we moved up in the holler), we lived in a small community where the houses were side by side. In the evenings, or on Saturday, all the neighborhood children would gather to play outside. We would play games like Red Rover, Hide and Seek, Tag, Cops and Robbers, and many others to pass the time. Sometimes, the girls would play hopscotch or jump rope. The boys might play marbles or mumbly peg with their pocket knife.
We would play for hours and hours, with no thoughts of quitting or going inside. We were just having fun hanging out with our friends. Finally, some time before dark, someone’s mother would call their name and say, “John-n-n-y! Supper’s ready! Time to eat!” Then other moms would call their kids to let them know that it was time for supper. One by one, or maybe a few at a time, the crowd of children would disperse, and dwindle down to only a few. My mom didn’t have to call me twice. I loved playing with my friends, but by this time, I was hungry for some of her fried chicken, pinto beans and corn bread. My mom made the best corn bread! I could hardly wait to sit down and get started!
As we were seated around the table, there was always one or two kids that would linger outside long after the other children had gone home. While we were inside enjoying a fine meal, you could hear them bouncing a ball, or still playing a game. They would rather play than eat. Sometimes, my dad would remark, “They’re going to stay out there and starve to death!”
Spiritually speaking, many people are starving to death, because they would rather play outside than come and be filled. They don’t even think of what God has done for them, or what He’s prepared for them. They are just living in the moment. They are too busy to acknowledge Him, unless they are in trouble, or they need something. He has so much to give…if we would just come to the table.
How about you? Are you hungry? Supper is ready…
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” Matthew 5:6
